Make a ringtone that starts at the right moment
A good ringtone starts at the most recognisable part of a song, not at its slow introduction. Echoly lets you click exactly where the best part begins and keeps 15, 20, 30 or 40 seconds from there, with a gentle fade at the start and end so it never begins with a jolt.
How long should a ringtone be?
For calls, 20 to 30 seconds is enough because most phones stop ringing after that. For an alarm, 30 to 40 seconds of a slowly rising part works well. For a message or WhatsApp notification tone, 3 to 5 seconds is better; select that short part yourself and use Edit → Keep selection only.
Setting it on your phone
On Android, save the MP3, open Settings → Sound → Ringtone, and pick it from your files (some phones show a "+" button for your own sounds). iPhone ringtones have to be added through GarageBand or a computer, because iPhone does not use MP3 files as ringtones directly.
Make it louder or softer
If the ringtone is too quiet in a noisy place, use Effects → Normalize before exporting. If the song has a loud bass, Effects → Volume can lower it a little so the phone speaker does not crackle.
