Trim the silent start of a recording, take out a mistake, or keep only your favourite part of a song.

Cutting audio the easy way

Most recordings need a little trimming before you share them: a few seconds of silence at the start, a cough in the middle, or a long goodbye at the end. Echoly opens your file as a waveform, so you can see the loud and quiet parts and cut exactly where you want, down to a thousandth of a second.

Keep one part or remove one part

There are two ways to cut. To remove something, select it and press Delete (or the scissors to cut it so you can paste it somewhere else). To keep only one part, select it and choose Edit → Keep selection only; everything outside the selection is removed in one step.

Cut at the exact second

Click START or END above the waveform and type a time such as 1:23.5. On a phone, drag the round handles at the edges of the selection. Zoom in with Ctrl and the mouse wheel, or pinch with two fingers, when you need to cut between two words.

Avoid clicks at the cut

If a cut sounds abrupt, select the first or last half-second and use Fade in or Fade out. Undo keeps up to 100 steps, so you can try a cut, listen, and go back.

Questions about the audio cutter

Will cutting reduce the quality?

Cutting itself does not change the sound. If you export as WAV or FLAC the result is exactly as clear as your original; MP3 at 192 kbps or more sounds the same to most listeners.

Can I cut several parts?

Yes. Select and delete one part, then the next. Press M while listening to drop markers on every mistake first, then jump between them with the ] key.

Can I cut a song on my phone?

Yes. Open the page in Chrome, drag one finger across the waveform to select, and use the Cut, Delete or Keep buttons at the bottom of the screen.

How do I cut the audio of a video?

Open the video file directly. Echoly takes its sound, you cut it here, and export as MP3.
